Photographer's Note

(shì) belongs to the 500 most common characters in Chinese. It is composed of 5 strokes, which means that it is of very low complexity. The average number of strokes is about 13.

Possible translations include 'world' and 'life', but it can also mean 'generation' or 'lifetime'. It most commonly features in the compounds 世纪 (shìjì = century) and 世界 (shìjiè = world).

This picture shows two men working on an advertizing sign for a new hotel or shopping mall in Tianshui. My guess would be it's for the "New World Hotel" or something...but then in Chinese. Those types of names are very popular these days.
