Throughout history Georgia has been the destination of many empires due to its strategic location between Asia and Europe and has been conquered several times, most recently by the Russians. The country still preserves numerous buildings and monuments as a testament to its glorious past. But the monuments that deserve the most attention are the religious ones, due to their antiquity and artistic and cultural level.
The Orthodox Jvari Monastery dates back to the 6th century and rises above Mtskheta, on the other side of the Kurá River. Jvari is visible from several kilometers around the hill where it is located, overlooking Mtskheta from the east.
The attraction of the Jvari monastery is irresistible. Also, being probably the most sacred and spiritual place in Georgia, it is inevitable to visit.
The name is translated as the Monastery of the Cross. Jvari is considered a holy place, as that is where the saint who led Georgia to Christianity, Saint Nina, established her cross. The cross is slightly bent at the top, legend has it that Saint Nina had used her hair to secure the cross.
According to traditional accounts, in the 4th century Saint Nina stayed there to pray and erected a wooden cross on the highest hill in Mtskheta. The church was built on top of a cliff at a confluence of the Kurá and Aragvi rivers. You can see the color change of the water when the rivers flow together. In the WS a photo of the rivers
The first smaller church was erected on the remains of the wooden cross in around 545 and was named after the little church of Jvari. Later, between 586 and 605, a second and larger church was built, called the Great Church of Jvari. This great church is the one that remains today.

Hello Luis,
I've also visited the Jvari Monastery and even shown a photo of it.
Many churches and monasteries in Georgia are located in the midst of beautiful nature and often in spectacular places.
Also there are usually very convinced believers to be seen.
I love the beautiful shades of the facade and tower.
Also the magnificent view from above on Mtskheta in your WS is truly wonderful.
I've been there too but I never succeeded in pronouncing the name correctly.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Luis
This photo of the old Georgian monastery reminds me of photos that Chris has posted in the former Georgian part of Turkey.
A good photo with excellent detail visible in the large version.

Hello Luis,
It is a fine view of this ancient edifice. Is it still used as a church or is it just ruins of a church these days?
Regards,
MT

Hola Luis,
That must have been a great adventure and incredible feeling to visit this exotic country, not so far and yet feeling so different.Very attractive architecture even though many parts are damaged. The workshop well illustrates the amazing location of the monastery.
Excellent reportage,

Hello Luis,
The beautiful monastery is captured from a good angle where we also see a few persons outside the entrance. You had a pleasantly soft light and the colours turned out well. The WS shows us an impressive view of the town by the confluence of two rivers.
Best regards,
Gert

Hola Luis,
What an amazing, incredibly old monastery.
The details that you show us infer that changes in materials and design have occurred over the centuries but it is still a strong, substantial building. The abutting towers create a fine, 3D effect, in this warm light.
I wonder what sort of difficulties these saints had, exploring different lands and trying to install a new, different religion! I imagine it was difficult!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Luis
I like the viewpoint of this well taken medieval monastery on what looks like a rugged hilltop with dominating earthy tones. People presence is vital which gives us some nice colour separation, contrast and liveliness, above all the sumptuous detail of the stonework is a real gem of the shot.
Best wishes

luis
