Nubra Valley, a photo from Jammu and Kashmir, Nord

Photographer's Note

Nubra Valley has an average altitude of 10000 feet. It is known as the 'Cold Desert'. To reach Nubra Valley one has to cross Khardung La (World's highest motorable pass). During winters, the temperature falls down to as low as -40 degrees celcius.

HDR with one raw file.
I am trying to keep the picture as natural as possible.
Please let me know if you think that the post-processing is too aggressive, if too much saturation, etc.
I will try to improve for the next photos.

Bonjour Julien,
Magnifique paysage de montagne d'une grande profondeur. La photo est bien composée et le regard est agréablement guidé dans l'image. Superbes reflets et belle profondeur de champ qui nous mène aux confins des montagnes. La lumière est excellente et les couleurs belles et naturelles. Mais la force de l'image provient de ce ciel nuageux, dont le grand angle fait particulièrement ressortir la beauté.

Hello Julien - Not being really a great lover of HDR and having no personal experience of the technique, I find it difficult to be very objective in responding to your request for comments on your processing. I can say though that you have worked with a delicate hand. So often this technique seems to be more important than the image and that I don't like. Here you have a very natural look with restrained saturation and fine detail. It would have been good to make a comparison between what would have been your regular processing and this one. To the shot itself, a fine composition with incredible dynamism provided by the clouds. I would prefer it without the figure but that a personal preference. Warm regards rosemary

Bonjour Julien,

En voyant la petite vignette, je me suis dit "oh non, encore une photo HDR qui gâche le paysage". J'ai quand même cliqué car je trouvais qu'il y avait du potentiel.
Finalement, le traitement HDR n'est pas si gênant. Tu es parvenu à conserver un aspect relativement naturel. Cependant, je ne suis pas persuadé que le HDR soit nécessaire dans un tel cas où il ne devait pas y avoir beaucoup d'endroits ombragés. Selon moi, un simple filtre polarisant aurait suffit à avoir un joli ciel.
Pour le reste, c'est une belle photo, un très joli paysage avec un superbe ciel et un beau reflet.

Salut Julien ,
Le décor montagneux est sublime , et les reflets sont splendides dans ce miroir parfait . Et que dire du ciel !
Je ne connais rien au HDR , mais ici je trouve l'effet assez naturel , avec un rendu qui me plait beaucoup (un peu ce que j'essaye de faire par d'autres moyens : couleurs assez saturées , image assez claire , mais contrastée ...)

Julien - I've never used HDR, but in my viewing experience with it it seems pretty easy to go overboard; you clearly haven't done that here. The sky is the only area of the photo where you can see any real traces of it. The overall photo is stunning - great framing to include the figure on the left, and the combination of the reflection with the clear water allowing you to see the reeds and sand below the surface is a great touch. The reflection, especially further back in the frame, is crystal clear.

What a beautiful scene. The choice of a low POV is excellent and there is a perfect reflection of the sky in the water.
Concerning the post process, I don't think you overdid this. It still looks very natural to me and the high contrast suits the sky very well
