On approach we street photographers are never sure what response to a request for a portrait might be from a complete stranger. A refusal can leave you feeling flat and unsure for next time. But sometimes it all comes right as it did here. This chapati maker was taking a breather probably daydream and appeared to be looking out of this small shop but was only too happy to oblige. I love it when a requested street portrait comes right....

This a great character study. The man partly in shadow seems to be slightly annoyed with the photographer. We see his work materials and other belongings in his humble little shop. Excellent colours and light control.

A puzzling picture, wonderful to look at. Who is this man? Why is he so pensive? Your note gives some insight but the mystery remains intact.

This is a lovely portrait, almost like a painting by someone like Caravaggio.
The lighting is just right, highlighting the sitter and the muted colours all add to its appeal.

Surrounded by his few possessions, it is a frank and accurate portrait of the man.

Not much equipment in this chapati shop. A good photo of the dark interior with just enough light where it matters.
