Photographer's Note

The source of the river Bhagirathi. Gaumukh ("The mouth of a cow") is the cave in the glacier, from which the river emerges in full vigour.

Though Gaumukh is considered the source of the river Ganga, it's other tributory Alaknanda contributes more to its water.

This photo was taken way back in 1994 with a film-camera. I have recently scanned the partly discolored print and then try to restore the color as much as possible with image processing software.

GAUMUKH GLACIER, WHICH IS THE LIFELINE OF NORTHERN INDIA, IS RECEDING AT THE RATE OF 120 FEET A YEAR DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING. IT MAY BE REMAINING ONLY IN THE PHOTOS AFTER 50 YEARS FROM NOW.
