This is the last image of my ongoing Odissi series. For further explanations, see me Odissi theme.

As you can see, Odissi dancers can be quite expressive at times. In general, facial expressions play a dominant role in South Indian dances - especially Kathakali, which is a dance of expressions. Odissi, while not South Indian, borrows many elements of expression from the South.

Here, the dancer is illustrating the creation of Durga. The motion of the hand was a bit unintentional - but helpful. It seems to provide a dynamic component, complementing the strong facial expression.
