Photographer's Note

A little girl sitting pensively in the courtyard of her house, with the Himalayas beyond. This is a small village named Devagram, through which we trekked this June. Devagram is populated by a couple of hundred houses - each built in the quaint style of ancient Garhwal. Between the houses stretch wide terraced fields, with stone paths running from house to house through the fields. Most of the village has views of the "lovely cone of Dunagiri, displaying to full advantage its beautifully proportioned curves," to quote the famous mountaineer Eric Shipton. While Dunagiri peak is beyond the far left of the frame, the peak at the left is Nanda Ghunti, a 6309m peak nearby.

The house at the right has a wedding ceremony in progress. Also, this is a candid photograph - I didn't ask the subject to pose.
