A Lady with Sindoor, a photo from Rajasthan, Ouest

Hello Dear friends,

This is my another post from Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is a small town adjacent to Ajmer. I captured this image in the last week of January, 2012. This is a shop of different items which use the woman. The shop owner was a lady and she kept this colored powder on a large dish which is called 'sindoor'.

Sindoor is traditionally applied at the beginning or completely along the parting-line of a woman’s hair or as a dot on the forehead. Sindoor is the mark of a married woman in Hinduism. Single women wear the dot in different colors but do not apply sindoor in their parting of the hairline. Widows do not wear sindoor, signifying that their husband is no longer alive.

The sindoor is first applied to the woman by her husband on the day of her wedding; this is called the Sindoor Daanam ceremony. After this, she applies it herself every day.

A great photo with some very appealing colours. The piles of brightly coloured powder look impressive and they go very well together with the surrounding colours of mainly blue and yellow. The lady is well included too.

What interesting notes.
I love to learn new things, especially about different cultures and traditions.
This is such a colourful photograph and has a lot of meaning when linked to your notes.
The elegant lady makes a very good link between the f/g and the b/g. We just follow her arm!

Hello Swapan,

Along with this photo, rich in color, you also furnish a fascinating note. The tradition of applying sindoor is much clearer to me. I've visited India only twice (Bombay, New Delhi, Agra, and Chandigarh) but have many Indian friends in America, but never had a good explanation of the tradition.
