Nandhi at Mahabalipuram, an repeatedly posted place with a different perpective ( Pazhaya Monthayil pudhiya KaL )...
Nandhi is euphemism in Tamil for people whom you have to "cross" before reaching powerful people. Originally, Nandhi statue ( bull god) is an essential structure in any shaivite temple & a lot of importance attributed to it.
The basis for this stems from the fact of India being a agrarian country with lot of importance attched to the Bull. He is supposed to hear your your please & pass it to the main deity, the shiva. You cannot see shiva without attending to him. This explain the euphemism.
