Photographer's Note

Three women (previously known as Harijans, now scheduled cast) are very excited and quickly dressing up because I am taking pictures. They earn just 20rps per day, by labouring in a farm (mum, dad and 15yr old daughter labour to provide for 5). In other parts of Gujarat, it is normal to be paid upto 60rps per day for the same work. Its tough work - let me tell was part of my village training. The work is also mind-numbingly boring..however, it beats sitting behind a computer all day as well!

During my stay, I was to absorb myself in village life. This meant to partake in whatever my host family does. One of my duties was to wash dishes at the boss's house (a high cast Rajput)...whom discouraged me from washing their dishes, as they felt it was "not my job". I am a Patel - relatively low, though my status seems to be elevated since I am from a foreign country (they think I have money!)

...I left the village with far more questions than answers...

These villagers live in a small village named Kancheta. This is a very sleepy part of Gujarat...partly due to its location. The massive Narmada river flows through Kancheta, along the Gujarat belt. Many communities have been relocated as their homes would have been destroyed after the construction of the largest dam along the river. The relocated community (of approx 15yrs) I visited assured me that they are better off, as they now have access to schools, electricity, and water. Suggestions have been made to raise the height of the dam, which could cause further unrest. Many communities, like this one, however are unable to be relocated, as they are not considered "at risk".
