Photographer's Note

Tari Pendet or Pendet Dance is a traditional Balinese dance created in 1950 by the Balinese Dancers Mr. I Wayan Rindi and Mrs. Ni Ketut Reneng. It was originally a dance of religious worship and generally performed in Bali’s Hindu temples. More recently, however, the dance has also been adopted as a welcome dance – at weddings etc - although it still contains sacred-religious symbols and meanings.

Malaysia recently included the dance in a tourism advertisement shown on National Geographic television promoting Malaysia as a holiday destination. This caused an outcry in Indonesia and the ad had to be withdrawn.
