Photographer's Note

Okay, so this is not the first Hiroshima image on TE, but here goes...

In 1998 I traveled to Japan, spanning just two weeks in November. It was the height of autumn foliage season. With Osaka as my base, I traveled as far north as Tokyo and as far south as Miyajima. It was a good mix of city and country -- temples, trails, and all kinds of trains.

Toward the end of my stay, I spent a day-and-a-half in Hiroshima. I found the people to be among the friendliest in all Japan, and a lot more down-to-earth than farther north. The scar of the atomic bomb was palpable; at the same time, the city was modern and thoroughly absorbed in urban daily life. It was the strangest combination of feelings being there.

Not far from ground zero, which was just over a bridge, I found the remains of the Genbaku Dome, which had served as a type of trade center in WWII Japan. I offer you, my friends on TE, this photograph.

I know TE is not for heavy post-process work, so let me say what went behind this. I took the original shot in 35mm with Ilford black-and-white 400 film and had it processed in color. I then scanned the photo (just yesterday!), sharpened it a bit, and desaturated it. I thought the original was too yellow as a result of the type of color processing and would appear to be too much PP for this site, so by going to a more desaturated style, I hope that it's acceptable.

Here is information on Genbaku Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage site:

"The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945. Through the efforts of many people, including those of the city of Hiroshima, it has been preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing. Not only is it a stark and powerful symbol of the most destructive force ever created by humankind; it also expresses the hope for world peace and the ultimate elimination of all nuclear weapons."
