Photographer's Note

More from my archive.

Since 2008 I have been travelling to Japan almost annually, sometimes more than once annually as well. This leaves me with a lot of photos.

This is from my 2012 trip, shot at Itsukushima (formerly known as (but still being used) Miyajima).

The so called "floating" torii is naturally not floating but firmly seated in the seabed outside Itsukushima-jinja.
The bay it sits in is quite shallow, so on days with a low tide it is actually possible to walk on dry ground out to the torii itself. But as the tide rises the surroundings are again submerged, giving the impression of the torii floating in the sea.

There has stod a torii at this site since 1168AD, and the current torii (the eigth since the original) was constructed in 1875.

I have yet only been here in the middle of the day, but at some point I will have the option of photographing this wonderful structure during sunset.
