Photographer's Note

The Japanese like to rank everything. There are so many top 3 lists of blah, blah, blah! This photo was taken on Miyajima, which just happens to be considered one of the 3 most beautiful spots in Japan. Its most famous landmark is the floating torii (a gate - like the one on top of these stairs) which you will see on millions of postcards. It's the first thing you see as you catch the ferry from Hiroshima over. When the tide is in it appears as if it is floating on the water! Anyway, walking through the backstreets of this island I came across this torii. I love the cherry blossoms on both the tree and ground and the beautiful traditional roof of the house on the right. But more than that I love the air conditioning units and the contrasting style of architecture of the house on the left. I thought of cropping it out, but i think as it is, is a more realistic representation of Japan and is cool in its own way!
