Photographer's Note

Cute children are a dime a dozen in Japan, but while riding the streetcar in Fukuoka, I noticed the cutest I'd ever seen, complete with rare curly brown hair. The venue didn't allow for a shot (even a sneaky one), so I sat in frustration.

As it happened, the girl and her mother got off at the same stop as me, and walked the same direction toward Kumamoto Castle. Walking in the rain, the girl was even cuter dancing along with her umbrella. She walked carefully along the raised yellow strip in the sidewalk (designed to help the blind, and ubiquitous across Japan). I walked past, and took this shot while palming my P&S facing backwards at about mid-thigh level (her face was blocked by the the umbrella at my eye level).

These kind of grab shots are hit-or-miss, but I love how this shot ended up capturing the beautiful oblivion of a child at play in her own world.
