Photographer's Note

I took this photo on an early morning walk - a minivan which has seen better days rests in the shadow of Mt Kinabalu.

Minivans are a popular form of transport in Sabah. According to Lonely Planet "minivans are small, eight-seater vans (usually white), often stuffed with as many passengers and as much of their gear as the laws of physics permit."

Mt Kinabalu can be seen in the distance. At 4095m it is the highest mountain between the Himalayas and Papua New Guinea. In geological terms Mt Kinabalu is young at a mere nine million years and this granite mountain is still growing at a rate of about 5mm a year.
