Photographer's Note
I count myself very lucky to witness this scene. I was attracted by the blue, red, orange and black colors, like a painted colorbook by school children.
This was 1/40s shutter speed and I had to hold steady at best I could.
Initially, I thought I would focus on the sun, sky, river and included just the bow of the ship, carefully avoiding the mast. After a while, I thought it would make a difference to have the ship.
So 15 minutes later, I compromised with a part of the sun, sky, water, clouds, and the ship, mast and its craned boom which is straight up here.
In this view, you get to see the craned boom working frantically in spotlights and in such sunset light, at overtime most probably due to Chinese New Year just around the corner and a lot of cargo goods to be transferred in and out.
Looking at it now, I like the red sky immediately behind the craned boom, as if imagining firing up missiles kind of movie stuff?
As the rays dimmed when the sun dipped further down the horizon, it was found that the sky lit up in bright red, like a painted sky from a school children's coloring workbook.
Anyhow, coming back to sunset. Everyday, the sunset is never the same as the day before. Each is special and unique. This is Nature's way to let us admire and appreciate its beauty. Such is Nature's best offer to us, everyday without fail.
Thank you for looking.
Regards
Bill

another masterpiece, Bill. superb colours, and I have to fight the impulse to shout "that cannot be real!" for I know that this is not the limit of what the nature can throw at us :) I like a lot your choice to include the ship in the frame, it definitely adds a point of interest and its dark silhouette provides a striking contrast with the flaming skies. I also like how the mast mirrors the bright lines of the cloud formations, feels as if they radiate from the same point. great shot.

Hello Bill,
Impressive photo, the setting sun certainly sounds elusive in your part of the world over the past few months. The image is attractive because of the combination of warm colours and black contrast with the frame and fishing vessel. The shapes provided by the boat are useful also by transforming the FG from being potentially empty to having an actual purpose, while the towering mast helps to provide the vertical dimension to the scene. Excellent saturation, not overdone, just at the right level. Congratulations. Very good for a hand held shot.

Hello Bill,
Interesting note that I was so engrossed reading it.
The perspective of this sunset is now wider and the ship in semi silhouette is just an awesome fg subject like a foliage landscape composition. The sky remained brilliant and don't you just love the changing colors that only happens once in any situation. I'm sure you enjoyed taking this shot as much as watching the real stuff.

Hello Bill,

Hi Bill,
I would be hard pressed looking for a sunset by any river in Sabah. Still, seeing your photo, I feel like kicking myself for not stopping the other day on the way back from an assignment.
It has more or less the same drama as yours with colors and tones going crazy, as if the day was throwing tantrum with the setting sun.
But when you look at the water surface, seeing it not as dramatic albeit simmering, it can have a calming effect on one self.
I wouldn't take this composition any other way Bill.

Hello Bill,
really this sunset in the river is fabulous.A first rate panoramic capture of Rajang river. Indeed, it is so much better to provide the expansive horizontal view here. The subdued light, with the sun still painting pastoral colors in the clouds makes this a memorable shot. The silhouette of the ship, on the foreground make the capture more interesting.Well done Bill.

Hello Bill,
Wonderful sunset colors, cloud display and foreground. I love the fact that you walked us through your compositional decisions, and, yes, the inclusion of the ship made the picture, without which it would look dull and akin to any other river. The v-shaped, red-lit clouds are the real extra. The fact that it looks as if coming from the ship is superb!!!
Nevertheless, I don’t quite understand why you compromised sharpness with a long hand-held exposure, something that, even if not noticeable here, must be fairly apparent in the original, when you could have used a higher iso (200 or 400). No matter how steady one can hold the camera (and with a wide-angle it won’t look so bad in small print), sharpness will never be optimal, unless we are talking of 1/500 sec. exposure. But I know you would have opted for a tripod if you could.
As for post-processing, maybe you could compress the photo just enough to produce a 200Kb file, since the lousy jpeg produces terrible noise all over the pic.
Great shot!!

Victor

Love this one too..i mean you wait for the right time..you think this could make the best shot..and the light changes the very next moment..and you have something better...you are addicted to the colours of sunsets..

this one is even better compared to your previous one. The larger inclusion of the ship makes it much better, besides the intensity of the colors gives such a powerful view. Your Tamron 17-50 is as good as a Nikkor lens. Long time ago i thought the best optic in the world was the Nikkor lens, but after seeing a lot of pictures of the people with Tamron lens i must addmit that Tamron lens are as good as Nikkor lens and i suppose they are cheaper! I suppose we are slaves of the publicity and myths of the new tecnology.

I think the composition is OK like that, i.e. with the ship and the mast. Of course sky and sea are the real protagonists of the photo, but somehow the ship enhance the presence and beauty of the sky. About the colours and the clouds... well there is little to say, they are selfevident and talk by themselves better of every description we can give.
Bravo for the compo and bravo for being there at the right moment.
