Mangroves are very important to balance the ecosystem, however mostly ignorance about the importance of mangroves but also greed to make a quick money are the key factors of the destruction of mangroves forests along the coast in South East Asia. In the small hamlet of Semiling half way between Butterworth and Alor Star there is the Kedah mangrove research centre. Here every stage of the mangrove growth cycle can be observed like the blooming of its small red flowers.
