Photographer's Note

Melaka was formally the greatest empire in S.E.Asia, but has been in decline for 400 years. According to the excellent museums there, it was nonstop war here for about 300 years and was the seat of power in the area for Firstly the Sultan of Melacca, then the Portugesse, the Dutch, then the British, before they got routed by the Japanesse and then finally the Malaysians got their independence in the 1960s. Probably one of the best examples of Colonial history in the region and a little reminiscent of Brazil because of the portugesse influences.

It was Chinese Newyear when I was there, I thought there might be a party but I think most people were home with their families. This shot is of all the closed restaurants in Chinatown.
