Photographer's Note

Every late afternoon the city crowd descends on the Pantai Bersih in the small township Bagan Ajam just 25 km north of Butterworth. Just a few hundred meters north from the hawker stalls at the stony beach lives a fishing community and the beach is sandy. It was late afternoon and this fisherman was using his net to fish for crabs or similar in the coastal waters. It certainly is hard work and the catch normally is not so big due to the pollution of the major shipping lines through the Straits of Malacca.

Superb timing, Urs. You've caught the fisherman just after he released his net, and complemented the photo with an informative note. I can think of two other actions where technique translates to acquired skills and timing is necessary in shooting photos of them. One is in the throwing of a lasso by the cowpokes of the American west, and the other is in casting a line by a fly fisherman. I've never tried to capture the former in action, but I was quite successful in catching a flyer fisherman. Recently, I came across the slide I scanned for this image, and I can see that the original slide was far more effective, with the thin line seen as a continuum, rather than in segments as in the image I submitted.

In this type of action shot, the right timing is vital to produce a drama apart from other critical ingredients reqd such as ambient and lighting condition. I had tried few times when I was in Mekong Delta Vietnam but the results were not as good to my liking. Is this your first attempt Urs? The net is well seen and the thrower is in full momentum, but frankly I feel a bit disturbed by the distraction, which I think is unavoidable in this instance. Good compo with plenty of space for the thrower and timely shot. well done and thk for sharing.

nice capture. I like the movimento of the man body lauching the fishnet, that has a nice color contrasting with the background. Normaly white nets are dificul to see in this kind of photo and that one has a pretty color.

Fantastic action shot, Urs. The timming was perfect as the net is flying fast to the distance, if it had wings the fisherman would never see it again :))) Great that it has that orange tone for contrast. Love the frezing pose of the fisherman too. Congratulations for this one.

the thumbnail of this photo attracted my eye ;-)
probably the composition is not the best in this case, but what is most important here is the dynamism of the moment - the running fisherman and the flying net! In a way, to me it looks as if the net is trying to escape from him and he is trying to catch it :)

A wonderful capture of a critical moment with perfect timing on your part. Nice to see the net in such crystal clear focus (since its colour plays a major part in this shot - providing a beautiful contrast against the blue). Good depth of field, with a slight increase in noise in the background, ensuring that the eye is drawn first to the sharp foreground elements.
