Photographer's Note

In this part of the world the Durian is the declared king of all fruits, but not for everybody, in particular most Westerners do not like it because of its very strong small, comparable to the Italian Gorgonzola cheese.Personally I like it, in particular the creamy type from Penang.

Penang durians are famous throughout Malaysia for their taste and aroma. The very best of them are supposed to grow in countless durian orchards located on the southwest side of Penang Island, centering around the town of Balik Pulau like this durian tree in Kiti Kerawang above Balik Pulau.

"That thory thing" as the Malay call it in their language, is Southeast Asians what foie gras, truffles and caviar are to Westerners. People outside South East Asia describe the durian often as "smelly", "damp socks", "odoriferous", and other unpleasant adjectives to pin down what many in the Malay archipelago would describe as fragrant aroma.
