Photographer's Note

This black-crowned night heron lives around Teluk Tikus in Tanjung Bungah. His favorite place obviously is the very flat cove around the Majid Jamek.

This medium-sized bird is found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia. Adults are approximately 64 cm long and weigh 800g. Young birds like the one in the picture are brown, flecked with white and grey.

The breeding habitat is fresh and salt-water wetlands throughout much of the world. Black-crowned Night Herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or reedbeds. Three to eight eggs are laid. This heron is migratory in the northernmost part of its range, but otherwise resident.

This heron stands still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night. The one in the picture obviously was mistaken with the time, it was afternoon when we saw him sitting on this wood. Primarily herons eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammal and small birds.
