Sea Bajau way, a photo from Sabah, Est

Back to my travelogue on Sabah's Maiga Island.

During our short stay of few hours on Maiga Island, this Sea Bajau boy saw us approaching and he started to walk towards me. He was just curious. Well dressed and quiet, not smiling...he just stared to my camera. Here he was undecided whether to come near or stay a distance.

This is the east side of Maiga Island and the huts on stilt linked by a tall plank-walk which is just high enough to be above high tide level. I would like to be back to re-visit this place again.

Love this small boy who is a born swimmer.
Good peaceful colours, red , blue and green!
The small huts over the sea is amazing !

Hi Bill
What an eotic settlement. It goes back to neolothic times when people started using this pole building in lakes usually for trotection. Excellent manipulation of the POV colors and saturation

The location is a dream location for photographers, easy enough to take a good photo, yet you did not go for the obvious. You mixed a life statement with the beauty, thereby creating a photograph with meaning.

This is nice Bill, the white sand and the water is so attractive, the weather is nice too, a perfect place to relax and swim. That kid is an eye catcher. I just found his scale a bit surreal in that position. Well done.

It looks like an idyllic place to visit. Your POV is excellent and the little boy looks fascinated. A minor flaw is the slightly tilted horizon.

Your composition and POV are great! The little boy gives the scene a sense of scale. The small huts over the water create a nice line through the shot separated the beach and sea from the sky. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

Hello Bill. Your travelogue has top quality first class images which you shared with us here in TE and TL. I bet there are tons more in your shoeboxes. The composition here is perfect for National Geo magazine. The foreground rock and some green with the boy in striking red pants balances well with the houses he is living in. this could be a lovely coastal scenery photography with the diagonal line of the beach and the huts at the background but the inclusion of the boy gives another dimension to the compo. I really like his inclusion in the scene and reading your note. Children are curious, huh? Great job indeed!

I love this shot, the spotless white beach, a dream for all sea lovers and then the simple, rudimentary accomodations on stilts : not so dreamy after all but so interesting ! It's great too that you have the small kid on the FG, on the whole I find this an excellent documentary photo !

Hi Bill,

The diagonal line of the houses and of the horizon are assets to the composition. The child on the beach in the foreground is a complement to the composition. The presence of people has an effect of scale. The luminosity has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Stunning image Bill, Such clarity and perfect sharpness, great composition with the bridge that lead to the houses on water. The boy add much to the image. the light seem to be very bright yet everthing is in good details and not overexposed. Love it.

I see that others have already pointed to the tilted horizon, I'm not going to repeat that. but I WILL repeat all the strong points here - excellent light management to achieve the colours that border on overexposed, but are NOT, instead conveying the heat of the day; the strong diagonal of the sand in the foreground that frames the scene; the kid just in the right place, and how his clothes add a great colour accent. excellent work, my compliments.

excellent pov, the light and these colors are very beautiful too. I liked the way you put the houses and the the plantas. The kid is perfectly put in the scenery too. Even the dark sky remember something about a stormy weather while the sun beating in the foreground create a nice contrast

outstanding picture indeed, I like the composition and soft colours. I am not quite sure if it is Maiga though, it looks very much like the east shore of Sibuan to me. Or maybe I am wrong and those islands are so similar.

The place is beautiful, with the crystal clear colors of the sea, and the ingenious but fragile huts on stilts. There's a good combination of colors here, with the green of the (very typical) vegetation, the red pant of the boy and the blue water tank in the background. The colors of the sea and the sky, almost melted together, are lovely too. Well done.

I am sure I would love such a place. The Sea bajau have fascinated me from the start. That's not a coincidence if I was attracted by your : "Good morning, sea bajau!" last year.
