Photographer's Note

I've been absent from Trekearth for about a month while traveling in Europe.

The magnificent Seabourn Cruise ship Sojourn began its maiden voyage on June 6, 2010, and I had the pleasure of serving as a guest lecturer onboard for 18 days (June 16-July 4). Carrying up to 450 passengers, the Sojourn is in the class of small luxury ships, and indeed it is 'the' class of small luxury ships. A defining architectural component of the ship is an elegant spiral staircase spanning 5-6 decks. I took the photo with a small pocket camera while the ship was in port, docked in the Neva River in St. Petersburg.

Almost three years to the day ago, I had posted an image of one of my favorite spiral staircases, the double helical stairs in the Vatican Museum. The present image can be regarded as a counterpoint to the image of the Vatican Stairs that resonates with solidity and permanence.
