Photographer's Note

What follows is part of an article in the national paper The Age about a fatwa against Christmas (it has been withdrawn soon after it went public).

"THE Lakemba Mosque has issued a fatwa against Christmas, warning followers it is a ''sin'' to even wish people a Merry Christmas.

The religious ruling, which followed a similar lecture during Friday prayers at Australia's biggest mosque, was posted on its Facebook site on Saturday morning.

The head imam at Lakemba, Sheikh Yahya Safi, had told the congregation during prayers that they should not take part in anything to do with Christmas."

Pity that the Christians religious leaders are not able to do something similar against the way Christmas tends to be celebrated as it has become for many nothing more than a pagan ritual of shopping and overeating. This type of non religious focus on things material is not confined to the so called Christian countries but has spread even to nations that are not Christian but which have embraced the Christmas custom of giving gifts as one more festival by which retailers can make vast profits. There is no Christ in Christmas- instead children are more familiar with and fond of a bearded fat man in red pyjamas who can bring them things. As for the little infant born in a barn to refugee parents- who has time for Him?

The photo was taken in the then recently opened new terminal at Singapore's Changi Airport.
