In the heart of GUM, a photo from Minskaya, West

Photographer's Note

Gum is a State department store that is found in many cities in the former Soviet union but I associate GUM with Moscow since it is the most famous. I had a visit in GUM, Minsk, but found it quite boring due goods that didn't appeal to me.(clothes,household appliances etc) But what is lacking in goods are overcome by the interior design. Just have a look at this interesting staircase from 1951.

I couldn't decide if a color shot was better than b&w, but both options works fine in my opinion.

Hej Boa,
Det hade nog fungerat utan färger också, men jag gillar ändå färg bäst. Det gör väl du också, tror jag. Detta är en fin variant på de populära trappbilderna. Det brukar vara spiraltrappor som man ser rakt uppifrån, men den här kompositionen fungerar också jättebra. Den är full med fina diagonaler och färgerna är också snygga. Naturligtvis är tanten därnere rätt avgörande för helheten.

That is a fantastic staircase, more like a grand museum that a store. Your composition is superb too allowing a great wrap around of the balustrade

Hi Boa,i think that the color version is correct,it's nice to see the golden decorations in this way. I have to agree, this is one fine staircase!
Definitely too grand for a department store!
From your viewpoint, it creates an inner triangle.
It is great fun following the golden circles up or down the frame.

Your exposure is sharp and colourful. Great for an interior shot.

I instantly thought of the Escher maze with the triangular stairs in golden and white hues, the lady cloth are in accordance with the general hues and is perfectly placed, she is the icing on the cake

Hello Boa, I love staircases :). This is quite interesting with the triangles. Soviet stars are still there. Not like the fampous GUM in Moscow but the composition is nice.

As your shot shows, there is a really nice combination of straight lines and circles in this staircase. I was in Minsk's State Department Store several times in 1970-1980s, but I never noticed this staircase, maybe because it was always too crowded in that years. Thanks for showing how it looks now. Very well captured and described!

An engaging staircase with its dynamic composition drawing the eyes via the diagonal lines and there's great in depth effect too. It's always interesting where the people end up on these steps. You've got the colour tones and exposure spot on giving us a cleaner more simplified and less confusion to the eyes. Lovely work flows simply enhances that special 'feel'
