The Atomium reopend on 18th of February 2006.

After more than a year of renovation work the Atomium has a new face and will give visitors a brand new aesthetic experience by taking them on a very special journey through its spheres.

Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels, 1958, the Atomium is a structure that is half way between sculpture and architecture, symbolising a crystal molecule of metal by the scale of its atoms, magnified 165 billion times.

The Atomium was not intended to survive the Exhibition of 1958. Its popularity and success, however, ensured its place as a major landmark on the Brussels skyline. Today, the condition of the Atomium requires renovation work. (They are still working on the upper sphere, that's why you can see the cables for lifting the new sheets)

Dimensions of the Atomium:
The Atomium is 334.6. ft. high ; the spheres have a diameter of 59.0 ft ; weight of 2400 tons.
the diameter of the tubes is 9.8 ft.
The escalators installed inside the tubes of the Atomium are amongst the longest in Europe. The largest is 114.8 ft long. They can take 3,000 persons per hour. The elevator speed – the highest in Europe – is 16.4 ft/sec. It takes visitors up to the top sphere in 23 seconds and its capacity is 22 persons.

In the upper sphere there is a top restaurant with spectacular panorama view on the city of Brussels.

Bravo pour l'angle original, les deux croix tubulaires et les bouboules scintillantes.
Cet ambassadeur de notre pays est bien mis en valeur, bravo!

Hallo Luc,
Van een zeer bekent object die al zovaak gefotografeerd is heb jij er echt iets bijzonder van weten te meken. Dat zilver van de bollen in combinatie met het mooie blauw van de lucht steekt prima tegen elkaar af in een perfect lijnenspel.
Mooie plaat....erg goed gezien.

Knap shot, Luc! Daar stond ik in augustus ook :) Nu zijn ze allemaal af, het ziet er goed uit. Het blijft nog steeds een indrukwekkende structuur.

L'atomium que j'ai eu l'occasion de visiter en 2006 est une très belle construction ou plutot une oeuvre d'art qui est très bien mise en valeur avec cet angle de prise de vue !
