Winter light on the streets of Brugge.

I first visited Brugge back in '92, and in the intervening 15 years I'd forgotten what a stunningly beautiful place it is. I think it was in August that I went there for the first time, and the place was swarming with tourists and it was bloody hot. Winter is the best time to visit - quiet streets, room to sit down in the pubs, and of course winter light is the best for photographers.

Looking at the shot now, the barrel distortion bothers me a bit - it's especially noticeable on the church tower. It would have been less of a problem if I'd used my 17-35mm zoom (better straight line rendition), but on city trips I prefer the light weight and discrete nature of prime lenses.

And the constant companion of the title? Why, the shadow of course...
