Photographer's Note

I love Flemish and Dutch old Masters' paintings, and you know well why they always used dark tones of ochre colors on canvas when you visit those nordic lands in winter time. Bruges is of course a typical living canvas with its idyllic and peaceful canals surrounded by unspoilt architecture. Faded winter light, some flying birds afar, some reflections, some bare trees... Bruges is an endless inspiration for painters and also tourists who like taking photos.

Hello Deniz,
you are right, it does look like a painting. The texture and the colors strengthen this impression. The houses on the river banks form very neat rows and even the sky seems to work for you with the tiny clouds and some birds on it.

very old mastery (or masterly) and so gorgeous i could frame it and stare at it on the wall for hours. you have captured so well this lovely moody atmosphere, perfect pov and beautiful subject. i like how the dark water mark along side each wall draws such a definitive line between canal and houses. the reflections are so crisp they look as if they'd be wet to the touch. and even the small flock of birds at the top are a perfect touch. another masterpiece from you :)

This is a well known spot in Bruges, and you have captured here all the charm and character of these old walls. The ambient light is pleasingly soft and gives the picture a painting like quality. I like the appealing blurred reflections in the water and how the canal draws the viewer into the scene. The calm waters and the absence of people around gives a peaceful feeling. Very well done.

Hello Deniz,
The buildings in this view look almost as old as those in the famous paintings. Your photo seems to confirm that the great masters picked the right colours and blended them correctly (or you did a good pp job to make these colours resemble the paintings). The fine brushwork done with the clouds and tiny birds is especially impressive.

There are many wonderful photos from Bruges here on TE, our best master lives nearby :). But this one is quite unique, I like the place on the canal, photo probably made from a boat cruise, and the colours are marvelous, really like in Flemish painting. There are here some old photos made by Andre, they have similar mood. Perfect composition, the bare winter trees look very attractive, some blurry reflections and the birds. fascinating place and presentation.

I have to say, i've never been to Belgium but almost every photo i've seen from here seems to be a postcard!
can you visit belgium and have bad photos...I don't think so.
even here with the drab weather it looks great.
there's a mood thats totally felt and comes through the screen.
and I also like the black and white photo previous to this one.

Your title is very apt, the composition does indeed have the allure of an Old Master painting. The point of view and square framing are very well chosen to produce a pleasant well balanced composition. I like very much the low light and understated tones. The flock of birds silhouetted against that most interesting sky are a great plus. Thanks for sharing.

this really looks like a good old Flemish painting - thanks to dark well-balanced colours, a 'typical' mood and a relaxed atmosphere - despite (or maybe even due to) a grey day with tiny bits of light blue in the sky. It seems to me you chose a very good moment for shooting this "painting" - because the bare trees, with no leaves, reveal the whole beauty of these houses, along with the rippled reflection in the water. Excellent truly artistic shot!

altro bel quadro dalle Fiandre.
Una Bruges ripresa molto bene con colori un po' cupi, ma che ben si addicono al soggetto.
Ottimna la scelta del formato quadrato che si addice a perfezione al soggetto.
Bella la luce e perfetta la composizione. Buona anche la scelta della impercettibile vignettatura che concentra l'attenzione sulla parte centrale della foto.

It looks like a work of a great master as is, the tones of the buildings and that lovely sky look like delicate works of an artists brush. I can fully understand what you write in your note about this being a favorite place for photographers and artists, its a beautiful fairytale like place.

Your title is absolutely apt. I love Brugge, and was there in the Winter too. Your interpretation is stunningly beautiful and I wonder what (if anything) you've done to create the "old master" look: slight ochreish tint maybe. My only slight whinge is that to my eyes, it doesn't look quite sharp, but then, the slight softness may add to the atmosphere...

Hello Deniz. What a fantastic photo. The text says it all to pay tribute to this photo. Anyone can sympathize with what the previous painter saw and painted. Framed in a golden picture frame could hardly distinguish between photo and painting. Really a great shot.

I know it is in colour but this still carries a dark, timeless atmosphere. You pick these scenes well and present them with an amazing atmosphere each time, your choice of tones, composition, works so well.
