Photographer's Note

I did not know it at the time I took this, but there are heavy fines for both individuals and companies for failing to clear sidewalks in front of their premises. The fine can range from 20 - 500 leva (10€-250€).

Seen here is the Mall of Sofia looking towards St. Nedelya Cathedral at the vanishing point. It was the scene of a Communist Terrorist attack in 1925. Rather than disturb the ladies busily shovelling and removing snow, I veered off to the cleared track on the left and crossed over to the right hand side of the Mall further up.

Hello Chris,

When I was a child, people automatically cleared the pavements without threat or monetary incentive. It was just a friendly social thing to do. How times have changed!
Photographically, it is sad that the snow has been moved for it makes such a beautiful surface, changing everything for the better, visually.
Your viewpoint works, well acting as an irresistible guide between the fairy-tale lamps and trees.
You have achieved an excellent sense of perspective.

Et voilà, la neige est revenue, et l'entretien des voies également. C'est joli cette neige qui s'est déposée sur les branches et le mobilier urbain, cela fait une bien belle décoration.

Hello Chris,
Maybe I have walked this street, but the snow makes it very difficult to recognize it. Your composition has great depth, partly thanks to the ladies in they orange vests who are perfect focal points. It looks generally cold and unpleasant, but the photo is very nice.

Hello Chris, the snow is thick!And obviously there has been no wind to blow it off the street lamps and trees.Which actually makes for a lovely picture as we look along the street.
The women in their high visibility tabards add a little bit of colour.
Good perspective.

Hello Chris,
I guess you were waiting for the workers to clean the pass from the snow, and you might continue with the cold-journey along...
White blanket covered everything, trees, lamp-posts and paved road of the modern shopping area.
Perfect symetry on the view forwards. people/workers added life to the still frozen scene.

La longueur de l'allée donne de la profondeur à la composition. Tu as bien capturé l'action des travailleurs. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails des arbres et des lampadaires qui sont couverts de neige. Bonne journée.

Hello Chris,
the path must have been very slippery where cleared, it's interesting to see the positions of the people, two of the ladies seem to be posing too. The wintry transformation of this setting is very impressive, the snow created some mesmerizing patterns. I like the impact of the converging perspectives and the contrast offered by the warm colours, especially the vests. Congratulations and thank you!

On se croirait dans une rue du Québec dans cette composition. J'aime la neige blanche qui s'accroche aux branches et aux lampadaires.J'aime l'effet entonnoir qui apporte une belle profondeur.

Certainly quite a lot of snow has fallen in Sofia.
It looks wonderful on the branches of the trees and on both rows of street lanterns. I like the contrast between and the alternation of the black and white parts.

It's nice to see more snowy scenes from Sofia. The elegant, snow-covered street lights are very attractive, and we can actually see the snow being cleared away. It all looks pretty and fresh in this scene, but that probably changed after a few hours. :-) Here in NYC we are expecting our first snow storm of the season this weekend.

Hello Chris, I am lucky that no one look at the side streets in Warsaw. I have 40 m of the sidewalk and to clear the snow is really hard work. Fantastic view of these trees and lamps under heavy snow. Superb composition.

I like very much your reportage from the snow covered Sofia. The winter decoration adds a lot of beauty to the street photos, although I am glad I dont have that much snow now going to work every morning. Nice capture and the guysin orange vests add more color to the scene.
