Photographer's Note

Vranov castle is one of the most noteworthy Baroque buildings in central Europe. It was first mentioned as a frontier fortress in 1100 and its present shape took form after it was destroyed by fire in 1665. It is built on the easternmost end of a narrow rock promontory and today is owned by the state as a national cultural monument. The photo shows the entrance to the great courtyard decorated in the 18th century with two sculptures, made most probably by Italian master Lorenzo Mattielli.
