Photographer's Note

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world (570 m long, on average 128 m wide, area 7.28 hectares). Constructed in the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj, the castle transformed itself from a wooden fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has today. Rulers made their own additions so there is a mixture of styles. Prague castle has had four major reconstructions, but it keeps its classical facelift it took on in the 18 century during the reign of Maria Theresa.

The castle has three courtyards and it has always been the seat of Czech rulers as well as the official residence.

The history of the castle stretches back to the 9th century (870). The first walled building was the church of Our Lady. The Basilica of Saint George and the Basilica of St. Vitus were founded in the first half of the 10th century. The first convent in Bohemia was founded in the castle, next to the church of St. George. A Romanesque palace was erected here during the 12th century. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV the royal palace was rebuilt in Gothic style and the castle fortifications were strengthened. In place of rotunda and basilica of St. Vitus began building of a vast Gothic church, that have been completed almost six centuries later. During the Hussite Wars and the following decades the Castle was not inhabited. In 1485 King Ladislaus II Jagello begins to rebuild the castle.

auch mit der Qualität der Kamera ein äußerst imposanter Anblick vom Hradschin zur Altstadt. Durch das etwas düstere Licht und die fast fehlenden Blautöne kommt ein interessanter Effekt zustande. Reizvolles Bild.

Hi Achim,
I remember seeing your name in a forum, which was about the "most travelling Trekearther". Almost each photo in each of your pages belong to some other country, and this is really amazing.
This is a very comprehensive presentation of Prague, which i guess i had never seen before. The sky was not the best, but the quality and compo are outstanding. TFS,

This shot is taken from very good POV, view is superb...Also these little bit stormy colours of the sky give interesting effect.

Hallo Achim. Das Prager Schloss. Das Bild wirkt von den Farben her fast wie ein Gemälde. Es erinnert mich an frühere Zeiten, als man dort unliebsame Leute aus dem Fenster geworfen hat. Aber diese Zeiten sind gllücklicherweise vorbei. Der Blick von oben ist ideal, um Schloss und Stadt zu photographieren. Ein sehenswertes Photo. Viele Grüße, Wolfgang.
