Photographer's Note
Marcus Miller playing the “Big Licorice”, or bass clarinet. The first evening, the host Marcus Miller played in one of the most exciting jazz shows I’ve seen. The group included his usual group, Bobby Sparks on keyboards, “Poogie” Bell on drums, Dean Brown on guitar, Keith Anderson on saxophone, Gregoire Maret on harmonica, and “Patches” Stewart on trumpet. Kurt Whalem performed as a special guest on saxophone.
Marcus usually plays an electric bass, and has played with legendary groups such as Miles Davis. He was responsible for hiring all the musicians and providing the “house band” backing some individual performers, and playing in late-nite jam session called ‘Marcus Miller and friends. With his seemingly tireless enthusiasm, he did a superb job! The man who chartered the Rotterdam, Greg Lazzare, said when he asked Marcus to be the host for this cruise, Marcus listened without comment other than “I’m listening,” sounds like, “uh huh.” Finally he asked, “Who chooses the line-up?” when told that would be his sole responsibility, he next asked, “What’s my budget?”
When he received the response, “Whatever you need,” he agreed to host the cruise.

Hi Pat,
Another well expression from the jazz musician, very well using the light and nice framed. Honestly i really don't know about the jazz music, and your note really added my knowledge about this music stream, but sometime it make a peaceful feeling to listen such kind of music. Thanks for posting.

Hi Pat,
Well composed in very fine light. Every detail is clearly seen, and the black background is so apropos. Your cropping of the legs is tastefully done. I love the way his hat merges with the darkness beyond, as well as his concentrated expression. Very fine work, Pat.

Ciao my dear Pat!!
I am following you in your beautiful trip! Thank you for such a nice picture, so well composed in vertical; I like your low POV, and the balance between the man and his clarinet.
Great work!!
A kiss !

Hi Pat. I must say how impressed I am that you were able to get such detailed info about the band. The black background does its job and keeps our eyes on Marcus. Looking at your exif data it says you took this 56mm and you're showing the 70-200. Oops, lol! ;)

Hello Pat,
The bass clarinet is a seldom seen instrument!
Seems like you had a great time in Copenhagen, but happily still found time for some photography...
Well framed image, difficult conditions but you get away nicely here!
Greetings,

Hi Pat,
Being a huge Marcus Miller fan I had to jump on this .. the black of your background is great .. he is really well contrasted .. the stage lights feel great .. his posture and the instrument have a wonderful relationship .. the slight sense of motion feels great here ..
I remember when I was a young bass player Tutu and Amandla just floored me ..
thanks for sharing it.

hi pat
Marcus leaves his favorit instrument to play of bass clarinet, he played also with Kenny Garrett, Herbie Hancock and many other stars of jazz.
it's never easy to take photos of concert because of the light changing, you have nicely done it.
cheers

Hi Pat,
Another joyous capture of a man in love with his art. Great lighting makes your subject glow against the dark background. His instrument contrast beautifully with his lightly colors shirt that has a hint of shadow on it.

Hello Pat! Excellent capture and expertly framed! The musician and his bass clarinet fill the frame perfectly and the combo is well placed in it too. His expression is well seen.

hello pat
heh. it's one of my photographic dreams: to snatch some fotos of someone playing either bass clarinet or sax. i wind those two instruments photographically irresistible. :)
so, you've done it here. very nice shot with the musican being deep "into it". the black of the background is very fitting too. for my own personal taste, i would have gone with even stronger contrasts though (selectively) to tame down the light a bit and let it play only where it matters (on his face and the instrument).
but that's just my loud pondering here. i like the pic the way it is :)
my compliments and TFS

Hi Pat,
Isn't it ridiculous how some of our most talented musicians have to go overseas to get recognized and we have to suffer through "American Idol" episodes. (I stink at singing and I am not about to make a fool of myself in front of 150,000,000 people). Stan Getz practically spent most of his life in Copenhagen, which has a rich jazz tradition. Your versatility is very impressive. One minute I am critiquing a photograph of kayakers in Nova Scotia and now I am critiquing an excellent low light shot of an indoor jazz concert. What will I critique next? Outstanding nightime performance photo!
Stan
