Photographer's Note

Lighthouse and fortress island outside Hanko. The old lighthouse building has been demolished and in its place a new lighthouse in concrete has been built. The old lantern was spared and moved to the current lighthouse. The Finnish lighthouse society rents the old foghorn keepers building and has been doing restoration work on it for several years. The outside is expected to be finished this year. The society gives guided tours to visitors during the summer.

Building of the fortress started when Finland still was part of Sweden, but during the Russian era most of the walls were erected. Russarö is actually the only sea fortress in Finland which actually has defeated a foreign armada (during the Crimean war, if I remember correctly). The Russians demolished the fortress shortly after the war.

PP: Not much, added a little contrast and darkened a tiny bit. Sharpened. All done in Canon DPP from RAW.
