European Parliament

Let’s go to another part of Strasbourg. Even though Brussels is often regarded as the capital of the European Union, it is not the only seat of the European Parliament. According to a decision made in 1992, it is legally bound to meet twelve times a year in Strasbourg as well (and all votes must take place there as well).

Despite this heavily criticised going back and forth between Brussels and Strasbourg, it was still interesting to visit the parliament building in Strasbourg last summer. The building is called the Louise Weiss Building (Louise Weiss was a French feminist pro-Europe politician and MEP) and was opened in 1999 by French President Jacques Chirac and President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine. It is located in the Quartier Européen near the intersection of the river Ill and the Marne–Rhine Canal.
