Photographer's Note
In the middle of Place de la Bastille, there is a column called "Colonne de Juillet" (July Column), a monument to the Revolution of 1830.
The column is engraved in gold with the names of Parisians who died during the revolution. The gold-covered statue at the top is called the Génie de la Liberté (the Spirit of Freedom).
There at the end of The Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade, last Saturday in Paris, thousands of people had gathered for a giant concert. It is not very easy to get where they are sitting because of strong iron grids (in ws a view of how to get there).
For a lot of events in Paris, this place is a point of meeting of the crowd (elections, demsontrations and often the Pride Parade). At that place, stood before the French Revolution a prison called Bastille.
