Photographer's Note

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (French: Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille, Marseille but better known as The Major, Occitan) is the cathedral of the city. It is an imposing building, unique in its kind in France, evoking the East for its Romanesque-Byzantine style.

It was built according to plans by architect Léon Vaudoyer flat in the second half of the nineteenth century (between 1852 and 1893) during a time of great economic, social and population growth for the city.

Mayor's Cathedral stands on a plaza outside the city center, between the Old Port and the "new" commercial port, near the district of Joliette and Fort Saint-Jean. His great architecture and interior decoration of marble and porphyry give a striking and distinct aspect of most religious buildings.

It was designated a minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII on January 24, 1896.

It is classified as a historical monument of France from August 9, 1906.

La basílica de Santa María la Mayor (en francés: Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille, pero más conocida en Marsella como La Major, del occitano) es la Catedral de la ciudad. Se trata de un imponente edificio, único en su género en Francia, que evoca el Oriente por su estilo románico-bizantino.

Fue construido según los planos de planos del arquitecto Léon Vaudoyer en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX (entre 1852 y 1893) durante una época de gran crecimiento económico, social y demográfico para la ciudad.

La catedral de la Mayor se yergue sobre una explanada, fuera del centro de la ciudad, entre el Vieux-Port y el "nuevo" puerto comercial, cerca del distrito de la Joliette y del Fuerte Saint-Jean. Su arquitectura grandiosa y su decoración interior en mármol y pórfido le dan un aspecto llamativo y distinto de la mayoría de construcciones religiosas.

Fue designada basílica menor por León XIII el 24 de enero de 1896.

Está clasifica como Monumento histórico de Francia desde el 9 de agosto de 1906.

The architecture certainly evokes the East.

Hi Luis,

I realize it's been posted here (TE)before, but this cathedral is still vastly overlooked for many visitors to Marseille...or those with camera in hand. I regret not having taken more pictures myself, as the exterior is truly beautiful in architecture and style. This is a fine view to display its attractive qualities and dimension, it also helps give surrounding context and proximity to the coastline. And just to top it off nicely, plenty of sun to showcase the detail and patterns...then again, there are a lot of sunny days in the South of France. :)Enjoy the rest of the evening. Take care.

Claro que esta catedral presenta caracteristicas unicas en Francia, su aspeto, su localizacion fuera del hyper centro... Una bella luz ilumina el edificio, que se destaca muy bien del cielo azul.

How impressive is this big cathedral. Very strange mixture of different styles, Roman and byzantine, and these stripes like in Italian churches. Gorgouus view and I see it for the first time.

Another good architectural shot, history and character and of course its wonderful edifice is admirable. This looks aesthetically so pleasing full of great details and traditional colour, where the fine weather makes this standout to greater height. The patch of deep blue water finishes off so superbly.
