Photographer's Note

I had read that the Alps can be seen from the lookout on Fourviere hill in Lyon, but I knew that the air would have to be very clear for this to be possible. So when I walked up the hill to the lookout I wondered if the view in the direction of the Alps would be covered by haze or cloud, even though it was sunny in Lyon. When I reached the square next to the Fourviere Basilica, I eagerly walked over to the lookout and immediately saw Mt Blanc on the horizon, much to my surprise.

This is a telephoto shot looking over the roofs of Lyon, showing the ghostly apparition of Mt Blanc, 160 km away. The mountain stands high above all the neighbouring peaks, and above the haze. I used Photoshop to increase the contrast of the mountain, although it is still slightly hazy.
