II: 10.000 Crusaders on the road to Montesegur
As the Pope had no own army he had to make an alliance with the French king to have knights and noble men from the North of France engaged in the crusade against the Cathars. And no doubt that many went south to fight and also to win prosperty along the road.
As the King of France had ordered a blockade of the castle Montesegur to appease the Popes anger the siege started in May 1243 under the orders of Hugues des Arcy. It is said that the Roman Catholic Army numbered some 10.000 men this winter.
We can use our imagination to see all this men where many was coming through this valley on the road from Quillan, passing the little village Puivert in the beautiful landscape up here.

hi jack, superb note, top class;
and i like this sepia convention here - there is basically nothing apart from the landscape which on the first sight requires a full colour treatment, and you go for a monochromaic work: brave, effective, bit experimental;
have a nice day, jerzy

That dirt road and the antique treatment you've given the photo really makes it easy for us to imagine that army marching through the countryside.

Excelent colours (almost sepia) and interesting but simple composition. Important note helps us to understand the ideas of Cathars' or Albigens.

Hi Jack,
I like the lighting above the mountains, also a very nice perspective, good depth through the road along the trees. A very pleasant experiment with you mono chromic work.
Have a nice evening.
John.

Hi Jack,
A superb light and a well composed picture.
Why the sepia change? Didn't the original colors were nice?

Nice entry into this historical series, Jack, where the sepia toning again works well to accentuate a classic or timeless ambience. Compo-wise it's also pretty good, with the trees at the left making a good delimiter for the frame, and the diagonal path offering a good lead into the gentle landscape.

This is a nice image of this army in the note travelling there and the mood created by the composition in sepia open imagination for this;
Great place with a nice contrast between the hills and the valley.
