Sign Writer, a photo from Ile-de-France, Nord

Photographer's Note

In Montmartre I managed to capture this traditional signwriter (calligrapher) who was creating the chalkboard sign/ menu for a new cafe. I was very pleased to see that some traditional art forms are still alive in certain areas, a very fitting sight for a street on Montmartre.

* the mackerel tin used to hold his brushes. Also the Impeccable consistancy of his free-hand writing style. Magnificent.

Don't they say somewhere in the forum : no note, no point?
Anyway, I like the picture + I love theese old crafts that are disapearing unfortunatly. I never saw in Paris, or anywhere else in fact, a guy doing this, but we can see the man is not so young anymore. I would like to go and eat in this restaurant JUST because they are giving employment to honorable people like this gentleman.
PS. Note the material : a sardine can, and probably a chinese chopstick to mix the colour. Love it!

Hi James, this is a super image which deserves more attention. Your gallery shows that you have a skill to bring harmonious colours together. This I think is the best example. The colours are beautifully 'clean' in their reproduction. Your composition and exposure are also spot on. And a nice touch to ensure the inclusion of the improvised brush holder! Excellent stuff. I found it James, indeed mirrorred and the same yellow as background, Tamil publicity painters are famous in the world often working for foreign countries for big boards, lucky this man has not to fear. Very pleasant to have the same angle for a simular shot.

There is great care being taken by this signage artist and that is captured here wonderfully. The exposure is a difficult one, with high constrast, but you handled it very well. Great every day scene.
