Photographer's Note

Voici le centre ville du Havre. D'habitude, on s'attend à trouver ce type d'architecture dans les banlieues, mais au Havre, ce n'est pas le cas. Du coup, cela génère une sensation très étrange.

La raison de cela est très simple : le centre ville est très proche de la plage et du port et fut, en conséquence, détruit pendant la 2ème guerre mondiale. La reconstruction fut confiée à Auguste Perret qui dut faire vite et économique. Ses choix furent simples : du béton et des lignes droites (pour plus de détails, je vous renvoie vers un précédent travelogue sur cette ville incroyable).

C'est ainsi que Le Havre est devenu un des endroits les plus complets et les plus cohérents pour symboliser l'architecture d'après-guerre. C'est la raison pour laquelle la ville fut classée au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO, en juillet 2005.

je te tire mon chapeau car tu arrives, avec un décor par forcément photogénique, a en sortir une belle vue graphique. j'aime cette qualité que tu as. Bravo pour ce post (et bravo pour la note)

ta photo est bien composée et j'aime bien les graphismes, mais je l'ai visité il y a deux ans et franchement cette ville portuaire ne m'a pas emballé, honfleur en face est nettement mieux. mais ce n'est que mon point de vue

Comparing to the modern architectures and designs, those buildings look dull and the lines are simple. Good educational notes to show the importance of the this place in the history. Nice capture of the repetitive patterns. Good clarity.

Stéphane, peu d'architectes de cette époque ont essayé de faire du beau avec peu de moyens mais il ne faut pas hésiter à les nommer. La photo est prise sous une bonne lumière et ces immeubles ont encore belle allure.

I suppose highrises go with city living these days, but it is not everyone's choice. The architecture is not to my taste, but you have captured it in good light, despite the "heavy-looking" sky. The two main colours in the image compliment each other nicely.

Je découvre cette ville grâce à tes images. Quand je lis ton texte et que je regarde cette photo, je ne peux m'empêcher de sourire. Tu parles de lignes droites, mais la perspective ici donne l'impression que les immeubles sont tous de travers! ;o)
Une belle compo avec tous ces petits bouts de façades et une magnifique lumière.

Hi Stephane,
You have shattered my childhood image of Le Havre being a quaint little fishing town, but I guess it was really an illusion, with WW II having accomplished that...You have done an excellent job of portraying the postwar architecture here in fine lighting with good shadow effects. The architecture reminds me a little of the drab concrete buildings that were erected in cities during the 1970's, but here at least there are pleasing exterior colours as opposed to the dull grey that always reminded me of Soviet mausoleums and apartment blocks.
Although this scene does not make me cheerful, it is well presented and edifying...and I still wish to visit. All the best, Stephane.

Hi Stephane, a very rhythmic archi capture this is with beautiful light. I like the chosen angle of taking very much - the masses of the post war buildings connect in a interesting way. The definition and density is spot on. A very interesting and well crafted graphism!

Hi Stephane, this picture shows that architecture doesn't have to be old to be interesting. I like the way the buildings seem to be like little boxes stacked on top of each other.

Hi Stephane - very interesting urban architectural composition, I like the tight closeup, which enhances the harmonious rectangular façades, not exactly beautiful but interesting modern architecture.
