Photographer's Note

On the roads surrounding Sacre Coeur and all around Montmartre artists swarm the streets each day, some selling their work in the square. Others selling sketches like this man, with clipboard in hand he will quickly sketch your face. Usually to a high standard as well. I love this area of Paris, so traditional and peaceful. As you can see in 'Sign Writer' I also adore the classic artists going about their work with classic materials. Enjoy.

You've caught a good moment here James, and there's a strong connection between the artist and the sitter.
The composition is good, but I would have preferred a bit more space between the girl and the right hand edge of the frame so that her heel wasn't cropped. A small detail perhaps, but I think it's these small details that can make all the difference in separating a good photograph from a great one.
Good work, I like it.

Hello James. The view of the painter and its model is very intensively, - and interesting. The painter must be model observe exactly, so that he can paint a good picture. Clearly. The view of the young woman is not passive. It seems in such a way, as if it looks provocatively on the painter. That works very self-confidently. On the other hand it looks in such a way, as if it would kneel before the painter. You recorded the in any case crucial instant. A really good photo. Many greetings, Wolfgang.

It's a typical scene from this area of Paris, the artist sketching a tourist's portrait, but still a well captured & composed image. The colours are good, especially the skin tones on the girl.

I was going through your gallery and was suitably impressed. This one in particular stood out for its simplicity as well as its near-perfect composition. But Ben is right when he says you should have left a little more space on the right so as not to crop off her heel. Good Work!

Hello James,

This is a highly engaging photo. Since I do art (including especially in my youth portraits), I am very always attracted by the subject of a sketch artist, or a portrait painter. The artist is focused, the subject is beautiful. What would be at least as effective would be to try to stand behind and to the side of the artist, and record both his sketch pad and the model. The large intevening distance between the artist and subject is a bit distracting, "a discontinuity," but nonetheless it is a very effective picture.

I see that you went to school in Plymouth. I remember sailing out of Plymouth some years ago on a British Isles cruise, and seeing brass plaques "This is where the Titanic sailed from", "This is where (Darwin's) the Beagle sailed from," "This is where the Mayflower sailed from," and finally, "At this spot nothing historic happened!"

Great shot of a man in his working environment - the ravishing beauty doesn't exactly detract from the photo either... You've certainly captured something of Paris's Bohemian spirit here, James. Nice one!
