The Pont d'Avignon situated on the Rhone river in Avignon also known as Pont Saint Benezet ( Bridge of Benedict ) , was built in 1177 and completed in 1125. Originally 920 metres long and with 22 arches this famous landmark over the centuries has been damaged by the river flooding and having most of the bridge washed away mainly 1603 and 1605 then rebuilt in 1628 only to be damaged even more, and work on and off has progressed like this up on till the late 17th century.
It is now an UNESCO world Heritage Site as also the whole of Avignon and is famous for the Song which goes:

On the bridge of Avignon,

On the bridge of Avignon,
We all dance there in a ring.

First verse:
The beautiful ladies go this way,
Then again go that way. ( Chorus )

The handsome gentlemen go this way,

The musicians go this way,
Then again go that way.

This was taken from the Palais de Papes ( Palace of the Popes ), and well worth a visit as Avignon is steeped in history and a wonderful city.
