Photographer's Note

This capture is published to remind us that the infamous Berlin Wall was opened on November 9, 1989.

Which means that today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of that important date.

This wall piece stands peacefully on Potsdamer Platz, not far from its previous site when still in "service".
It has been decorated with lots of graffiti and chewing gum.

The total number of Berlin wall victims is still a topic of scientific research. Until today, 138 people are confirmed to have died when attempting to cross the border into West Berlin, beginning with Ida Siekmann (+ 22.08.1961 when jumping from an East Berlin window down to the West Berlin footpath) and ending with Winfried Freudenberg (+ 08.03.1989 falling from sky to earth onboard a defect balloon). Some were simply shot point blank. Additional 48 persons died from heart attacks or similar reasons when controlled near the border by the East German police.
