Photographer's Note
After the German reunification and the breakdown of the Warsaw Pact, NATO and especially Germany believed they could afford to cut down army, air force and navy seriously. Air bases were shut down by the dozen.
Pferdsfeld Air Base ETSP in the Hunsrück uplands was operational from 1961 until 1997. Two villages in direct vicinity to the runway were abandoned in the seventies due to the unbearable noise of free world's Phantom. Now there is neither an air base nor a village left at a site which once was called Eckweiler.
Only the church and the cemetery remain.

Hello Sven
This is a nice composition with the beautiful wild flowers in the foreground and the attractive church between the trees. The title looks very strange until the note is read. What a sad and strange reason to abandon two villages. I wonder why nobody moved back after 1997. This is beautiful Hunsrück of the Heimat films, isn't it?
Regards,
Gert
