GREATER FLAMINGO

Distribution:
Southern Sapin, S. France and East up to Kazakhstan, Middle East, N.W. and E. Africa.

Food:
Aquatic invertebrates, seeds of marsh grasses, algae and decaying leaves. Usually feeds with head, and most of neck under water.

Data:
Lives in saline lagoons and inland lakes. The world population is estimated at around 800.000 birds and is dispersed and migrating regurarly in small groups.

In Greece:
The Greater Flamingo is a regular migrant visitor in moderate numbers usually around March going up North and September-October when flying back to towards Africa. They mostly stop over in the wetlands of Thrace. During winter some birds will stay in the wetlands of Lesvos, Kos and Samos.
