A Yesterday shot, end of season, I saw many birds in formation flying above and I thought it would be nice to capture their migration trip.
For I went to the roof top with my camera, and the 70-300mm lens and begin to shot.
I wanted to capture the birds in front of the sun as black silhouettes with the colorful sky which was exactly what I wanted, for many reasons: POV, and technical camera settings.


About the shot:

The light was low, there was no way of capturing this shot with a different background. Even if I tried for the experience, the result wasn't acceptable (not to my eyes it wasn't)
So I played with Shutter Priority (TV button in Canon camera)
I locked the shutter speed to 1/640, and the ISO to 200. Nevermind the f/5.6 (besides the focus range was set to infinite).

I am now thinking I might have a better result with 1/1000 and ISO 400, however my shot satisfies me.

The fact was that I couldn't compute the speed of the birds, as the were flying mad, and not even the focus range, and I had to control it manually both settings!!!

A simple tip: You don't get this picture under these circumstances I was lucky and I know it, don't get dissapointed, you must try hard, take 40-50 shots, and maybe one or none might be good.

My tip is: Aim a specific point and lock there, play only with focus, and wait until the birds pass by in front of the point you aimed, (like shooters), then take the shot. A tripod and a remote control are extremely useful.


Post Processing Notes:

I live in the city, so besides the excelent background, it included many antennas from the rooftops.
- Clone stamp used to remove those and the rooftops
- Clarification + High contrast increased
- Saturation didn't have to (contrast increased the colors I wanted)
- Noise removed up to 85% (I needed a smooth velvet sky)
- Unsharp Mask slightly slightlty SLIGHTLY increased, (to avoid the white artifacts close to the birds)
