Photographer's Note

Traditional, folk music and dance, and tradition in general, here in Greece are not a something to be exposed in a museum or to be preserved in a "fishbowl". Tradition in Greece is "alive 'n' kicking" and it's present in every aspect of daily life. From the mountainous regions to the smallest island of the Aegean, you can find children learning the traditional songs and dances. Especially, from where I come from, Crete, you will find in any family, a lyre or lute player, a singer, or a "madinadologos" (someone who writes "madinades", the traditional, short Cretan poems). This photo is from a small island of Dodekanisos, called Leros, and I can tell you that this young man, member of the traditional cultural group "Ariadne", is one of the best violin players I've heard in my life.
