"An Athonite Skete is a monastic hamlet, with Kellia (houses) inhabited by one to ten monks, with a chapel, where they celebrate their daily services. On Sundays and great feasts, they are gathered at Kyriakon (the central church), celebrating there. Attached to Kyriakon is a hostel, for the pilgrims.
Agias Annas Skete is the most ancient and biggest on Athos. It was founded in 14th century by St. Gerontios, close to the sea-side, as Voulefteria Monastery. Some years later, the monks moved uphill, because of the frequent pirates¢ invasions, and built their Kellia on the steep slope.
It has some 60 Kellia (35 of them, inhabited) and 70-80 monks. Its Kyriakon complex (dominating the left photo¢s part), dedicated to St. Ann, mother of Theotokos, on an altimeter of 320m., was built in 18th century."
