Panorama of Lake Voulismeni, a photo from Lasithi, Crete

Lake Voulismeni is a former sweet water lake located in the centre of Agios Nikolaos. Since 1867 or 1870 it is connected to the sea by means of a small channel. It is approximately circular, with a diameter of 137 meters and a depth of 64 meters.

There are various legends linked to the lake. One of them says that the Greek goddesses Athena and Artemis Britomartis used to bath in lake. Other says it is bottomless, perhaps because of its great depth compared to its dimensions. It is also said that the German army disposed part of their weapons and vehicles into the lake and all of that disappeared mysteriously. Another more recent event, apparently more credible, occurred in 1956 soon after a volcanic eruption in Santorini, when appeared dead fishes at the surface of the lake, originating theories that it was somehow geologically linked with that island. The vertical rock walls that surround half the lake seem to support the theory that it covers an ancient volcanic crater, but that theory has few adepts nowadays and most of the geologists believe that it is the mouth of an underground river.

great the panoramic view of Voulismeni lake at Agios Nikolaos,with teh clarity and the sharpness to are captured superb.I like the excellent light and colour management as the beauty of the place.I have visited the area four years ago,three or four times but never took photos from this advantage POV.

A superbly composed and crafted panoramic with the sweep of the lake leads the eye nicely into the image. You have captured both detail and interest in depth thanks to your chosen aperture whilst at the same time your shutter has allowed you to slow things down slightly and achieve a wonderful softness to the overall composition which I admire greatly. Love the colourful summer detail throughout and the contrast to deep blue water & sky is just mouth watering. Delicious top notch capture, Congrats.

I'm sure one day i'll get to see this beautiful place in person.

lovely photo you have posted. the lighting and overall exposure is perfect.

love the dark royal blues of the water contrasting with the brighter blue sky.

This is a fine panoramic photo with lots of interesting details among the buildings and the boats. The colours are great and the sharpness allows us to completeley enjoy the view. You have also written a good note that tells us about the history of this place.

Hello José,
A lake in the center of the city! It certainly ensures a lot of water amusement during the warm months.
Quite a few legends appear on this lake. The dead fish in this water at the time of the volcanic eruption on Santorini is quite remarkable.

In my humble opinion, Agios-Nicolaos is the most beautiful town in Crete, no offence to our Greek friends who might be thinking of other places...
A fabulous view, blue sea and a bay with a perfect round shape.
Unfortunately, when we were there in 5/2005 I had a very bad pic. taken there, on the opposite side.
Nevertheless, still remember the charm this location offered, and good food as well.

Hi José,

My first impression was to think this was man-made. Perhaps it's the panoramic cut, the perceived shape and how it appears enveloped by the city, or simply the fact I've been to Las Vegas too many times and seen similar re-creations with hotel properties!? :) A splendid presentation which utilizes the negative space of the lake itself as an actual feature.
